Practice Owner and Certified Clinical Supervisor

Maximilian Shafir, MSW, LCSW

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker as well as a Clinical Supervisor. I have been extensively trained in Family Systems, Family Structural, and Eco-Systemic Family Therapy. In my work, I incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Gottman’s method for couples.

I provide counseling online and in the Keep Counsel office in Raleigh NC. In sessions, I help my clients create time to dedicate themselves to the things they most deeply want, need, and care about. Depression, anxiety, shame and anger are often the early warning signs that there are things that matter to you that you might have neglected, compromised or given up on. In sessions, I can help you learn to decode and use their messages to rebuild a life that feels more fulfilling and meaningful.

I sit on the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, which works with approving and funding services and pilot programs in Wake County for at-risk youth involved with the Justice System.

I am also the Executive Chair of the Legislative Breakfast on Mental Health. This Non-Profit organization brings together Mental Health Executives, Insurance Leadership, Legislators, Congressmen, Senior level Executives with Department of Health and Human Services and Clients from across NC to speak about the most important mental health issues relevant to our citizens in an annual conference held in Chapel Hill.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate

Juliana Schiano, LCSWA

Hi, I’m Juliana, but most people tend to call me Jules! I have a Master’s Degree from UNC Chapel Hill in Social Work, as well as two Bachelor’s Degrees from Elon University in Human Service Studies and Communication Design. I am originally from Philadelphia, but have loved living in North Carolina.

I have had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of individuals in various settings throughout my career. Initially, I worked helping to facilitate mediations for families navigating child custody proceedings. Additionally, I have worked with individuals seeking gender-affirming care, as well as with university students, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Most recently, I have worked with adolescents at an intensive outpatient practice. Here, I helped to provide therapeutic intervention to teens three times a week through group therapy in addition to individual and family sessions.

My therapeutic approaches are largely based in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Art Therapy. I enjoy working with adolescents, young adults, families, LGBTQIA2S+, and neurodivergent clients. Regardless of your identity or the issues you may be facing, my goal is always to create an environment where you feel comfortable engaging in your therapeutic journey. My approach to therapy is person-centered. I believe that you are the expert in your own life. My job is solely to offer strategies and a healing space to help you live more authentically.

When I am not at Keep Counsel, I am most likely either sewing, at the pottery studio, or reading. I also love spending time with my adorable cats (Vincent and Joel) and being outside!

If you think we’d make a good team, let’s schedule a session. I am excited to meet you and honored to be a part of your journey.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate

Kate Jackson, LCSWA

Hi! I’m Kate, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate (LCSWA). I hold a Master of Social Work from North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Social Work from Appalachian State University.

I have experience facilitating group therapy for adolescents ages 12–18 in an Intensive Outpatient Program as well as working with adults in an inpatient psychiatric hospital, where I gained valuable experience supporting individuals with acute mental health needs.

In addition to my role as a therapist at Keep Counsel, I also work in a hospital setting where I support adults experiencing mental health crises and substance use disorders.

My clinical interests include women’s issues, adolescent mental health, and trauma. I draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Trauma-Informed Care, and Polyvagal Theory to meet each client where they are.

Throughout my experiences in clinical work and self-discovery, I understand that being vulnerable and open can be difficult. I am here to help make that journey more accessible to the clients I work with. Working with high-risk populations and using evidence-based practices such as DBT, CBT and Family Structural therapy I am able to work with clients with high anxiety, obsessive and compulsive patterns and relational issues within their families or personal lives. All of my experience has helped me to really slow down and make sure that my clients are feeling heard and understood so I can meet them where they’re at.

Above all, my goal is to ensure that every client feels seen, heard, and understood. I strive to create a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment where clients feel safe to grow and heal.

Outside of therapy, you’ll usually find me hanging out with my cats, watching reality TV, or spending time with friends and family.
